The Herald · 29 September 2026Miners Federation sets out a safer, more formal future for small-scale mining

The Zimbabwe Miners Federation has called for artisanal and small-scale mining to be recognised as a permanent part of the national mining economy. At a mining safety symposium at the Zimbabwe School of Mines, the Federation proposed district mining service centres for licensing and technical support, cooperative models that let miners pool resources, mandatory mine plans and risk assessments, and a culture of zero avoidable fatalities. It noted that small-scale miners delivered about 34.9 tonnes of gold to Fidelity Gold Refinery in 2025, and roughly three-quarters of national deliveries so far in 2026.

Zimbabwe Field GuideSmall-scale miners drive record gold output, but challenges remain

Zimbabwe produced 46.7 tonnes of gold in 2025, up 17% on the previous year, and artisanal and small-scale miners contributed about 75% of it. The article highlights the sector's importance for rural jobs and foreign currency, while setting out the problems it still faces: smuggling, violence at mining sites, mercury pollution, unsafe shafts and limited health screening. It concludes that formalisation, regulation and practical support are needed so that the sector's economic gains are not outweighed by its social and environmental costs.

According to Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe monthly reviews, gold exports earned US$3.36 billion between January and July 2026, keeping gold as the country's leading export. June was the strongest month at US$583.4 million, driven by higher production, while March was the weakest, which the Reserve Bank linked to lower wet-season output and softer international prices. By July, gold made up 36.3% of total merchandise exports.

Magaya Mining · 25 September 2026Magaya Mining joins the Kwekwe District Silicosis Awareness Conference
Delegates, including Magaya Mining team members, at the Kwekwe District Silicosis Awareness Conference

On 25 September 2026, Magaya Mining took part in the Kwekwe District Silicosis Awareness Conference at Kwekwe Polytechnic. The conference brought together people from across the mining sector to build awareness of silicosis and to share practical ways of preventing and controlling silica dust exposure.

Silicosis is a serious lung disease caused by breathing in fine silica dust. For a company that works alongside thousands of small-scale miners, understanding how to recognise and reduce that risk matters. Attending events like this helps our team strengthen its own knowledge and bring that awareness back to our sites and the miners we work with.

Magaya Mining received a certificate of attendance in recognition of its participation. We share the conference’s message: together for safer mines, healthier lungs and a stronger future.
